MyFootballClub - Historic Shirt Arrives at Museum

1st September 2008 was a historic moment in world football as it saw the first ever transfer  decided by a fans poll. On that day 7,500 members of MyFootballClub voted in favour of John Akinde leaving the club they own, Ebbsfleet United, to join Bristol City for a fee of £150,000.

MyFootballClub was formed in 2007 by like-minded football enthusiasts with the aim to raise enough funds to purchase an English football club. FC United of Manchester and AFC Wimbledon had started the ball rolling although MyFootballClub wanted to take fan ownership one step further. Members each paid a fee to become part of an online community and after raising enough money decided to purchase Blue Square Premier side Ebbsfleet United in January 2008. Any individual who pays an annual fee has the power to vote on any major decisions the club makes including team selection, player transfers, admission prices etc.

In typical MyFootballClub style, a recent poll was conducted to see whether an Ebsfleet United shirt worn and signed by John Akinde should be released to the Museum. Nearly 1,500 members voted in just over 24 hours with an overwhelming 97% voted in favour of it being displayed in Preston. The National Football Museum is delighted to receive such a significant shirt into its collection and the shirt will be on display in the near future.
