Hartlepool United FC are celebrating their 100th anniversary and to commemorate the club’s centenary Hartlepool Art Gallery are hosting a special exhibition called ‘The Art of Football and P100LS: 100 Years of Hartlepool United’.

The National Football Museum has loaned a substantial number of works of art as well as artefacts such as early 20th century football equipment, toys and games and Hartlepool United memorabilia.

Highlights of the exhibition include ‘The Game of the Year’ by Ithell Colquhoun, painted in 1953 and Henry Cotterill Deykin’s ‘Wembley Cup Final 1951’, with the crowd cheering as Jackie Milburn scores one of his two winning goals for Newcastle United. There are also two oil paintings by Cecil Beaton, ‘The Tackle’ and ‘Footballers’. Cecil Beaton is regarded as one of the most distinguished photographers of the twentieth century.  However, he was also a talented illustrator, painter and designed sets for film, theatre and the opera.  He had a long and varied career and he captured a diverse range of subjects in his work, including football.

Emma Hamlett, Museum Manager for Hartlepool Council’s Museum Service, said about the exhibition: ‘We have brought together a wide range of fascinating and emotive items which capture the passion and spirit of the beautiful game over the past hundred years. We’re very grateful to the National Football Museum and to Hartlepool United Football Club for the help they have given us during the creation of the exhibition’.

Wiebke Cullen, Collections Officer at the National Football Museum, commented: ‘We are very pleased to work with Hartlepool Art Gallery on this exhibition. It is good to see the National Football Museum’s outstanding collection of art and artefacts travel to other parts of the country and be enjoyed by many more visitors.’

The exhibition at Hartlepool Art Gallery will run from 25 April until 30 May 2009. The gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays 10am to 5pm. Entry is free.
