Barclays Working with Disadvantaged Youngsters Project
Disadvantaged children from deprived areas are a key target group for the Museum’s education and social inclusion services. Thanks to a grant from Barclays Bank, in 2005/06 the Museum was able to launch a major initiative to reach disadvantaged children in relatively deprived neighbourhoods of the city of Preston and the surrounding region.
The initiative aimed to:
Talks and handling sessions for school pupils from deprived areas were delivered both at the Museum and through outreach visits, to primary, secondary and special school pupils. Paul Cookson, Poet in Residence at the Museum, delivered interactive poetry workshops. In total over 5,000 pupils were reached by the scheme. A special celebration session was also held for Barclays Bank plc employees and their children at the Museum.
Thanks to this partnership with Barclays, the Museum was able to dramatically increase its services to pupils from deprived areas, both at the Museum and in the community.
